Apparently we we're having some problems with the secure certificate for the checkout pages. Firefox and Internet Explorer were both saying the https was insecure and that Geotrust was unknown certificate authority. It was never insecure... despite the error, there was still 256bit encryption at work.
This issue has been resolved. Geotrust certificates in the past always listed Equifax as the certificate authority because they bought out that company about 4 or 5 years ago. Just recently Geotrust started issuing the 256bit certificates with their own name "Geotrust DV SSL CA" instead of the usual Equifax information. This is what was causing the browsers to distrust the certificate. The solution was to include a bundled certificate provided by Geotrust. Our secure server pages are now working!
